Add the worst customer service and heavy "user-base underestimating (miss)communications" and you begin to see why it is impossible to create healthy business plans. That is why RLRL and RLSL businesses, and a lot of older users, are moving out of SL. Mostly thanks to Linden Lab incompetence, more and more people are finding their way to Opensim based worlds like OSgrid. I predict 2010 will be the big exodus year for Second Life. Revolution will happen as Opensim (opensource) software has become so much better during 2009. Wanna see for yourself? Download the "Hippo" or "Meerkat" viewer and you can simply enter Second Life or any Opensim based world with a few clicks. I'm not really sure this will hurt small businesses, since all you have to do is sell something less cheap to offset the fees. You also have to own a parcel of land to host your delivery server at, so somehow you have to be making money. I do have to disagree that freebies are promotional items, since a lot of people give away OpenSource things through SLX, such as Emerald's LSL radar.
